Chapter Text
Waking up to the next day, Naruto simply wanted to just go back to bed…
Yeah not happening.
“time to go to the academy”, Naruto says as he finishes brushing his teeth.
He takes a good look at the mirror, at how his sclera were full of blood, turning then black.
“should I…”, he says, using transformation jutsu his eyes and making his sclera turn white again and then undoing it right after, “nah! They look cooler this way”.
As he prepares to leave, he reaches over to the kitchen table, opening a portal under an envelope.
“can’t forget about that”, he says, sensing the name change form to the Hokage tower, “Knowing those assholes, they’ll sign this without even asking Minato to look at it, good”.
Exiting his house and crossing the sliding door portal he exits at the academy’s bathroom and makes his way to the classroom, finding himself a nice corner to sit in and wait.
As time passes the classroom begins to fill…
“hey, that’s my seat!”, Sakura’s voice assaults his ears.
It’s too early for this sh*t.
“I didn’t saw your name on it”, Naruto answers not raising his head.
“hey, dead last, what are you doing here, only real ninja are allowed here!”, and that the voice of the annoying sitting image of Kushina that is Mito.
“are you blind?”, Naruto asks, tapping the headband tied to his arm.
“you failed the test”, Sasuke says with a smug expression, “impersonating as a shinobi is a crime punishable by death”.
“so good thing I’m not impersonating one”, Naruto answer, really not bothering to raise his head to look at them, “ask your brother, he was the one who gave me this headband”.
“liar!”, Haruna protests, “big bro would never lower himself into promoting a failure like you!”.
“your perception of what is or isn’t true is not relevant”, Naruto says, brushing them off.
“alright, everybody sit down!”, Iruka demands as he enters the room.
After a very boring speech, the team selections start and much to Sakura’s (and Ino) dismay she’s not in the same team as Sasuke, instead she got placed with Yakumo and Naruto.
“alright, team eleven”, Rin says, walking into the classroom, “meet me in the roof in five minutes”.
Meanwhile in the Hokage Tower.
“who approved this?!”, Minato bellows as he holds a scroll with an official stamp.
“Minato, what’s wrong?”, Kushina asks, as she was walking into the office.
“Naruto officially changed his name”, Minato answers, “he submitted an official petition this morning and the council approved it”.
“what?!”, Kushina screams, snatching the scroll from his hands and reading it herself, “Minato we have to do something!”.
“do what?!”, Minato asks, “the name change is legit and Naruto is an adult now, the only way for him to change his name back is if he wants to and all things considered, I don’t think he would do that”.
Back in the roof, Rin contemplates her team.
“alright, let’s start with some introductions”, Rin says, “I’m gonna go first, I’m Rin Nohara, jonin of Konoha”.
“I’m Sakura Haruno”, Sakura says, “nice to meet you”.
“I’m Yakumo Kurama, from the Kurama clan and I can’t wait to be a shinobi”, Yakumo says with an excited tone.
“I’m Naruto”, Naruto says with a calm and disinterested tone.
That was unexpected, mostly the fact Naruto did not said his surname and the overall lack of care in his tone.
“alright then, as much as I appreciate your enthusiasm none of you are a full-fledged shinobi yet”, Rin says and she sees the expression in the girl’s faces change.
“what?!”, both Sakura and Yakumo asks.
“that’s right”, Rin says, “I do not enjoy doing this, but as a medic, it is my duty to rip the figurative band aid. The academy simply drilled into your heads the basics and gave you a solid base from where you will build yourselves, the titles and grades means absolutely nothing in the field, competence and reliability does”.
Rin explains and the girls nod, while Naruto watched with a neutral face.
Well, that is within expectations, at least to Rin.
Sakura is a civilian born, she came from a merchant family despite the frequency they worked with shinobis, the inner workings of the system where a mystery to them.
Yakumo came from a clan, a small and relatively weaker clan with no renowned shinobis, from her files, many of her clansman rarely make it any further than chuunin and most simply trickle back into the civilian life.
Naruto on the other hand… no matter how bad his relationship with his family is, being the son of the Hokage means he knows how the inner system works, so his neutrality to the explanation is not surprising in the least.
“thus, it fall to the jonin sensei to evaluate if you are apt to become full-fledged genin. Any questions?”, Rin says and noticing a raised hand, “Sakura”.
“what will happen if we don’t pass the evaluation?”, she asks, nervous.
“that will depend on what I make out of you, I can either sent you back to the academy or boot you out of the program all together”, Rin answers, no sugar coating at all, “do not take this the wrong way, but shinobi works is unforgiving and I would rather watch you grow old as a civilian than grow cold as corpse”.
There’s a beat of silence before Rin takes another look around.
“any more questions?”, she asks, seeing no raised hands she nods, “alright, the true test is tomorrow. Meet me in the training grounds at seven on the dot, also, I recommend you don’t eat breakfast or you might end up throwing up, you are free to go, see you tomorrow”.
Rin vanishes in a swirl of leafs, leaving the genin behind,
“so…”, Yakumo says, looking around to her hopeful teammates and shaking a little at the sign of Naruto’s blackened eyes, “do you guys want to go grab a bite somewhere?”.
“no”, Naruto answers and pair of sliding doors opens under him.
He falls down those doors, they close back and vanish leaving the girls dumbfounded.
“the hell was that?!”, Sakura asks confused.
Back in the Hokage tower.
“exactly my question”, Minato says, using the magic crystal ball to spy on the team meetings.
“honey, aren’t you going to look at Mito’s team meeting?”, Kushina asks, she was also curious about the jutsu Naruto used.
“Kakashi didn’t even got to the academy yet”, Minato says with sight, “but still, what kind of jutsu was that?”.
“I don’t know and chances are he’s not gonna tell us”, Kushina says with a sight.
Before Minato could console his wife, Itachi shushins into his office.
“Lord Forth, we busted an illegal niken breeding and dog fighting ring supposedly ran by Naruto”, Itachi says.
“what?”, Minato asks, “from the beginning, please”.
“we were investigating the Inuzuka kernels, much to lady Inuzuka’s dissatisfaction when we found discrepancies in financial books of the clan”, the Uchiha explains, and Minato nods for him to continue, “we followed the money trail and busted a major illegal ninken breeding a dog fighting operation. From the documents we confiscated, it seems Naruto had been funding the operation from the get go… since he was five”.
“that’s impossible!”, Kushina says, “my baby would never do that, and how was he supposed to do so when he was five?!”.
“he hasn’t, that’s the correct answer”, Itachi says, “it seems the real head of the operation had been using Naruto’s name and shinobi social security data to laundry money. Which brings me to the next topic of discussion; I suspect he wasn’t the only one using Naruto’s name as a cover name for laundering money”.
“and Tsume, how is she taking this?”, Kushina asks, worried sick about her baby and her old friend.
“she’s furious and is tearing the clan a new one, on a brighter note, she had opened her clan doors and granted the investigation task force free reign to investigate the Inuzuka”, Itachi says, “and believe me, the rabbit hole is way deeper than I would like admit”.
“and the actual criminals?”, Minato asks.
“they are under Ibiki’s care right now”, Itachi says curtly, everybody knows what being under Ibiki’s care means.
“thank you for reporting it to me, keep up the good work”, Minato says and Itachi leaves shushins away, “god, what kind of father am I? how could I let something like that happen!”.
“Minato”, Kushina says, mulling over Itachi’s words, “he said, they had my baby’s SSS (shinobi social security), who gave it to them?”.
At the haunted tone of his wife’s voice, Minato’s eyes slowly starts to go wide as a million scenarios start to play out on his head.
None of which was good.
